Karen--spinning in circles..

Part time job, everyday, 8-1am, 25hrs/week, while going to school. Any takers?

So I suppose one of the semi-highlights of this past week was that I got an interview with the Calgary Catholic School Board as a laboratory assistant. I was super excited about this position: it was perfect learning opportunity to branch out and see what my degree can really do. It also gave me the chance to teach and apply with I had learned in school, instead of doing robotic movements and using the occasional C1V1=C2V2 equation at work.

So, they call me, 8:30 Friday morning:
"We would like to see you at 10:30"
Wha?? 10:30?! I'm at school! I look like crap!! I have to go home!! Get ready!
"Err...how about 11? 11:15?"
"Oh okay then, 11:15 sounds good"

So I rush home, get prettied up, and drive back to the interview place. I walk in, and there was a lady and a man there, which were nice. They told me about the position, its requirements, what the job responsibilities are, blah blah blah, and then, their first question:

"So, Karen, would you be able to work everyday from 8-1?"

Wha?? I seriously thought that my resume had the word of "5th year undergrad student" written on it so many times.

"This is actually a rigid 25hr/week job. We need sometime from 8-1. What time are your classes?"
"They are actually usually between 8-2..."
"How many classes?"
"Three, but 2 of them have a 3-hr lab component"

They refused any time negoiation at all: No coming in early at 7:00 or leaving later during the day. It had to be between 8-1, no exceptions. I couldn't believe it. Now, if my classes were all situatated nicely and lecture only, it wouldn't be a problem. But this is the sciences, where if typically you don't have a lab portion, you'd still have a tutorial. It would be really hard to handle a 20hr-workweek if the employer was not flexible.

Now, here came the greatest question in the world:
"Now, now Karen...what would you do...I mean..what would you do...if you had to come to work everyday from 8-1? Everyday?? What about your classes? What would you do?"

What would I do? What was he asking me to do? Drop classes? Forget about school for this crummy job? WTF? What kind of stupid question is that? Would he do that for this job as well??? I might have to slave away at earning this Chem degree, but I have put 4 yrs of work behind it.

"No, I'm sorry, but I can't. This is my school, my classes, I can't."

Welps, that ended the interview there. I was pissed, like P-I-S-S-E-D, because of what they were expecting of me, and how unrealistic its requirements were. I am, in fact, still really quite bitter, but after thinking about it for awhile, I think all that time constraints and expectations would make me not like the job in the long run. So in a way, I'm glad I said that I didn't want it. And today, the lady called me telling me that they didn't select me. Duh. I wouldn't select me either. Not even for an interview. Why they called me in at such short notice is beyond me, but I will never do that again.

As I quote Diana, "If you paid for me dropping the classes, taking them again, my time invested, my effort, and also a six-figure salary, I'll take the job"

Brilliant

Anyways, in great news....I finally got the new Korean Drama "My Girl" complete!! Finished!! With all subs and everything!!! Here's a couple of clips of it, the first one is the title song, and the second is just some MV:

Woooooooooooooooooooooeeee!! I can't wait till I start watching this! *beams*

Rain's newest drama, "A Love to Kill", has also been out for download for a very long time. I never got it though, cause it wasn't much of a comedy, but rather a more serious one. However, I was thinking of reconsidering cause now they have hard-subbed English subs on good quality versions...so I don't have to go hunting for subs!!! Should I download?!?! Oh my oh my!

Reading Week is surely approaching, which makes me a very happy girl. What am I going to do? Sleep, eat, and go shopping (hooray for shopping!). Oh, and watch Korean dramas hehehe =P

What's with the cold weather. I miss our +5 sunny days!

  • Awwwwwwwwwww...!!

I was getting so excited for you when I first started reading your entry! No worries Kare - I'm positive that more opportunities will open up after you graduate cuz you already have the experience =)

BTW - Happy (belated) Valentine's Day!! I hope you and Darren have a good one!

  • I totally agree with you on why those people still want to interview you when they know you are a full time student in UoC. BTW, is it 8-1am, or 8-1pm, I think you can still make it if it is 2000-0100 at night, or am I mistaken on the time schedule of your UoC timetable.

I bet you 2 should be having a nice and sweet Valentine's Day, sadly I am still single. Sigh, but whatever, I think I need to focus more on my lab work from now on.

Strive hard till the reading week, then I think relax a bit and get ready to fight again till the end of the exam week. Seems the 'life-cycle' in university is always like this.

  • Awww...that's disappointing. I mean, seriously, how can a student make those hours (unless they're a part-timer).

  • Just remember this: It's their loss and definitely not yours. I find that most employers are such idiots. They expect you to care for a part-time job more so than your education. It's like, come on, get real. Like my idiot manager who gets mad when we can't work ANY shift even when some of us are still in school. Good thing I don't have to hear her nagging anymore. Anyways, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about since you have a lot of potential to offer. Cheer up, Karen! I'm confident that something better will come along for sure!

  • good decision kare! soemtimes things just don't work out and that's okay, just wasn't meant to be. school boards are pretty inflexible though when it comes to hours..my friend got hired to do some fundraising for school boards and she said her hours were pretty rigid too. so, in the words of the bad breakup line: it's not you, it's them.

are you coming clubbing reading week. no excuses! and being busy with rain and other korean dramas isn't a good enough reason
